Water storage is a crucial step for every prepper.
It is one of those basic things that we all require most to survive. We know that we use it to drink, cook, and clean with everyday.
If you have a garden you know how important water is to grow your food.
Without water we wouldn’t be able to survive.
How Important Is Water Storage?
Experts even quantify how important it is in the “rule of 3”. They tell us that as a rule of thumb we can survive three minutes without air, three days without water, and three weeks without food.
How Much Water Should You Store
Very few of us have any water that we keep stored for an emergency.
We rely on the water that comes out of our taps to satisfy our needs and don’t worry about what could happen if that supply was interrupted or contaminated.
So how much water do you need to drink to keep healthy. Again, health experts tell us that we should be drinking about 1/2 gallon per day to remain hydrated.
Of course, this will vary depending upon the temperature outside and how much physical activity we are doing. The warmer that it is or the more activity we do the more water we would need to drink.
And that is just drinking water. You are also going to need some for cooking and hygiene.
So lets say that if we were careful we could get by on 1 gallon of water per person per day for cooking, cleaning, and drinking.
That’s one gallon of water per person per day. Plus you are going to need water for any pets that you have and any plants that you rely on for food.
How Much Water Is Available
It is true that each situation is going to be different and each location is going to be different.
You might live somewhere that has a lot of rain or next to a fresh water lake, stream, or river. Your home might have it’s own well that can supply you with plentiful water.
But what if the access to these sources are cut off or the water becomes contaminated. You might also be forced to evacuate your home and these sources won’t come with you.
Just in case your water source is contaminated or you need to get water while evacuated you also need to know how to purify water.
So we should see how important water is and it is one of the very first things that we should store to help us survive unexpected disasters.
How Much Water Should You Store
How much water you should store is going to depend upon how many people live in your home and how accessible water supplies from other sources are in case some type of disaster makes your tap water unusable.
You should also plan for problems that could occur with getting to alternative water sources or what is going to happen if they get contaminated.
This all means that somewhere safe and easily accessible you should have water storage available.
I would recommend that you have at least 1 gallon per person per day with a 30 day supply.
But we also need to be able to find and clean water. In case we are forced to evacuate our home and need to live off the land or just run out of what we have stored.
